HISTORY OF NOSY BE

Nosy Be (In Malagasy: Nosy, island and Be, large; Ambariobe in local dialect) is a coastal island of Madagascar in the Mozambique Channel, off the northwest coast of Madagascar. Along with Diego-Suarez and Île Sainte-Marie, it was one of three former French settlements in Madagascar before the French government colonized the whole of Madagascar in 1895.

Nosy Be has a fairly regular shape, with a fairly irregular relief. Its highest point is Lokobe at 450 m in the south-east of the island, followed by Mount Passot at 315 m in the center of the island, accessible via the sacred lakes. Its coastline is interrupted by numerous bays and beaches fringed with coconut palms.
